>> more gunfire erupts in the city's west oak lane section overnighter. it happened just blocks from where a little girl was struck by a stray bullet. >> new on "action news" a driver crashes a stolen carraway child inside. >> and legions of fans this morning are remembering the children's tv icon captain noah. he died yesterday at his montgomery county home. >> but first up let's get a look at your accuweather. dave murphy is off. karen rogers is in and matt pelman is taking a look at traffic. good morning. >> it's so sad to hear about captain noah. i look forward to everyone sharing their pictures with him. excessive heat watch goes into effect tomorrow. the national weather service posted thursday through saturday a long period of excessive heat. today is going to be hot. today the high will be 90. weird all right already at 77. 77 through most of the region including allentown reading millville, cape may. 74 in dover. 75 right now in trenton. the difference today though is the humidity. so that starts today. this oppressive humidity sticks with us straight

through the weekend. we're talking about dewpoints over 70 degrees. you really feel the change today already. the other difference is the chance for storms. saturday six and action radar showing we have lots of clouds in the area. no storms in our region yet but watching for it closely. we have a disturbance that's weak and moving through. yeah, you already see to the north and west they're getting showers and thunderstorms, not quite in our area just yet. let's take a look at the temperature profile. by 7:00 a.m. lots of clouds, 76 degrees. a shower or a thunderstorm popping up. same situation at 10:00 a.m. because that weak disturbance moves through in the morning hours. so, 80 degrees at 10:00 a.m. it's feeling humid. lots of clouds. maybe a shower or a thunderstorm. it looks like it could be quiet for a few hours this afternoon but hard to really pinpoint when these showers or thunderstorms happen in this unstable atmosphere today. so be prepared for it at any point. by lunchtime it's 85, by 3 o'clock it's 90. we get more showers and thunderstorms later this afternoon. by 5 o'clock, 88 degrees. it's not going to rain all day, thoughly i'll show you

future tracker6. i think that gives you a good idea what's going to happen. that's coming up in a minute matt. >> we'll be ready for anything. >> yeah. >> much as you should be on the roads. lighting work going on here in south philadelphia overnight karen, southbound side of 95 approaching broad street. they were in the right lane but they're there no longer so everything is reopened along 95 and looks like we're pretty much reopened here along the vine street expressway. we were still waiting on the ramp from the eastbound schuylkill to the eastbound vine to reopen and i believe they might still be blocking that ramp. they should be out of there momentarily and at this point you can head for the vine street expressway. our crash in montgomery township along heart wood drive has cleared out. let's hop on the turnpike because a lot of construction still has not cleared out. they're in the right and center lanes westbound past norristown. then there are a few zones westbound between malvern and morgan town blocking the left lane, then the right lane so you're swerving around and if you're headed the other way eastbound in bucks county approaching bensalem there's a zone taking out a lane there. in south jersey watch out for a crash early this morning

along 295 northbound at auburn pedricktown. you can see a little slowing there as you come north of the delaware memorial bridge because of that accident with restrictions on this wednesday morning. tam. >> okay, thank you, matt. new this morning, a gunman shot a 47-year-old man while that man was walking in the city's west oak lane section overnight. the spray of bullets shot out a car's rear window. police rushed that man to the hospital. he's in serious but stable condition. the overnight gunfire erupted on the 2000 block of chelten avenue. and just a few blocks away from that scene another shooting, this one left residents horrified trying to help a six-year-old girl shot and bleeding on the street. the child was playing outside her home on the 6300 block of wood stock street. at least two different guns began to blast shooting at least 21 bullets through the air. that girl was shot under her left arm. bystanders rushed to offer aid until she could be transported to einstein hospital. she's currently in critical condition. we'll have more coming up in a live report in our next half

hour. >> this is new this morning a man driving a stolen carraway three-year-old boy inside crashed it in southwest philadelphia. the man lost control and struck a parked mercedes that careened into a park truck. this happened near 63rd and eastwick avenue. the boy is expected to be okay. the driver who was in his 20's was seriously injured. investigators say when he is released from the hospital he will be turned over to police to face charges. family and friends paid tribute to the three-year-old girl who was killed in a car crash in kensington on monday night. loved ones placed stuffed animals and candles for esther palmer at second and west york streets last night. police say the 17-year-old driver in the striking vehicle ran a red light and may have been racing a third car that left the scene. detective are searching for a late 1990's black honda accord. >> y'all know y'all were a part of it so please step up and say something because

there's a grieving family. >> the little girl's mother and grandmother were hurt in the crash. they are expected to recover. >> it is 5:05 and an eight-year-old boreas crude a backyard pool is in critical condition this morning at children's hospital. the child was pulled from there pool on soon nick view drive if winslow township just before 5 o'clock yesterday evening. authorities have not explained the circumstances of his near drowning. >> we are remembering a children's television icon this morning. >> the man known as captain noah died yesterday at the age of 90. w. carter merbreier was a beloved colleague for us here at 6abc. he and his wife pat co-hosted the syndicated tv series captain noah and his magical arc for nearly 28 years. >> katherine scott is live at the art museum with more on the fond memories capitol he no, sir left behind. >> reporter: matt and tam so many people grew up with captain noah. over the years he had a number of special guest on his show elvis press plea, jim le henson

dorothy hamil but it was his kind demeanor that kept children coming back for decades. >> captain noah was a hero. >> reporter: his real name was carter merbreier but all the kids knew him as captain noah. he died at his home in audubon, pennsylvania, tuesday after a short illness. he was 90. >> ♪ >> he was like family to the kids and they felt comfortable. >> ♪ >> reporter: merbreier grew up in delaware county attended penn then seminary at temple university. in 1967, captain noah and his magical arc began airing on 6abc. a show merbreier created and co-hosted with his wife patricia who died in 2011. >> what a great show. he taught kids how to share and we need more shows like that on tv. >> reporter: at its peak in the early 70's the show drew a larger local philadelphia audience than both captain

kangaroo and sesame street combined there were puppets cartoons and of course the songs. >> i remember send your pictures to dear old captain noah, send today, send right away. >> red and yellow and ping and green, purple and orange and blue. >> reporter: the show was recorded at 6abc studios and aired on the station until 1994 when the pair decided to retire. they co-host approximately 3600 episodes and all remembered for making countless kids feel special and loved. >> i can make a rainbow, make a rainbow. >> ♪ sing a rainbow, too >> reporter: captain noah is a piece of so many so many people's childhoods. you can still get a look at their set and props. they're housed at the please touch museum. live over center city katherine scott. matt. >> thanks so much katherine. 6abc president and general manager bernie president seneca issued this statement.

watching the radar closely. we're looking outside right now, lots of clouds above as a weak disturbance rolls through this morning. let's look at these numbers for if you. it's hard warm and oppressive. 77 degrees already. the depose 73. that's how much humidity in the air mass. feeling oppressive already. the pressure is currently falling. the winds are out of the south-southwest. they're light. no breeze really helping you out. the ocean temperature a warm 80 degrees. satellite6 and action radar showing lots of clouds in place. you see them move in. you can already see the showers and thunderstorms out to the north and west. we've got a weak disturbance that's going to roll through and as it does through the early part of the day at any point you could see a shower or thunderstorm kind of popping up and then later in the day you could see one popping up because of the heating of the day so at any point today you got to watch. now, this is a look at 10:30 in the morning, the model shows a storm that just went off the coast then. here or there lunchtime maybe a little quiet. it gets a little more active later on this afternoon so it's not as if one line of storms comes through. it's just that you need to be prepared for this at any

point. 3:30 in the afternoon a few more. they're kind of on and off. so a couple scattered showers or thunderstorms and with this oppressive humidity it doesn't take much to get something to fire up. by 8:00 a.m., 78. looks like there will be a shower or storm in one or two spots. by 10:00 a.m., 81. might be quiet for a little while as far as the storms for the early afternoon hours. by lunchtime feeling the humidity, 85. by 3:00 p.m., 90. that's your high. a few more storms late in the day like at 5 o'clock and 88 degrees. so, hot and humid at a. be careful at the shore. a moderate risk of rip currents once again today and the jersey beaches about 484 for your high in delaware, about 87 degrees for your high and really muggy with lots of clouds. here's a look at your exclusive accuweather seven-day forecast. and so it begins. today starts the oppressive humidity, the heat chance for a storm and we keep it through much of the seven day. hot and humid 90 chance for a storm. tomorrow muggy, few storms ireland. it'around.

even hotter on friday, 94 best chance for a storm on friday would be late in the day. saturday the heat index 105. the temperature 95. chance for a storm. sunday still sticky, 92. on monday, that's when the actual front comes through so we won't really get relief until that front comes through on monday. ahead of that front it's warm and humid, 89. better chance for a couple of showers or thunderstorms with that front. on tuesday, you finally feel a little bit more relief. 86. it's still warm but we'll take it after almost a week in the 90's. >> it does sound good. thank you karen. 5:11. we have the end result of a late phillies game out west. eagles starter denying claims he's facing a suspension for doping. >> fbi digs deeper into the operations of reading city hall. matt. >> good morning, tam. construction from the overnight gone here in camden county on the northbound side of 295 the exit for the black horse pike. everything is back to normal but the same cannot be said of many other construction zones. we'll have a check on 95 when "action news" continues on this wednesday morning. >> ♪

>> delta airlines predicts there will be more cancellations and delays today from its computer system failure on monday but at the flight board at phl there is only one delay so far. company officials say a critical piece of equipment failed at the airline's atlanta headquarters triggering a global computer outage. delta ended up canceling 1500 flights in all. the computers were working yesterday but they were slower than normal leading to more delays and cancellations but again, only one delay here at home. >> ntsb let's go on over to matt pelman and take a look at your traffic.

good morning. >> just to be safe just drive depending on where you're going. for now things look good. that's for now. we know it will change eventually but coming out of the suburbs we're good in bucks county along i-95 right by the scudder falls bridge. headlights are coming southbound. keep in mind near here in lower makefield the 95 rest area is closed until 7:00 this morning so a few more hours of that utility construction that necessitated the closure of the rest area. can't stop there until 7 o'clock. elsewhere in bucks county getting used to a new construction zone in the chalfont area that started this week. it's 9:00 until 3:00 mid days they're closing limekiln pike through later this month. stick with 313 dublin pike or county line road to get around that. also some work in florence township burlington county this morning. we're hearing it's until further notice on the turnpike connector westbound near the toll plaza. vial out of commission but it doesn't seem to be impacting speeds a whole lot as you come away from the main lanes of the new jersey turnpike. on 295, had a crash northbound

at auburn pedricktown. it was slowing us down the last time we checked. now speeds are in the mid 60's so it looks to me like they he got that crash pushed off to the side which is good news. and we had a crash as well as construction this morning in newark that was closing welsh tract road. the crash is now gone. construction is out there until early september so bottom line is i would use chestnut hill road or old baltimore pike instead and in hockessin old lancaster pike remains closed all week this week. route 41 gets you around that. time for the commuter report brought to by the waze app. one of our friends talk about the ongoing closure of the adams avenue glitch kressonville through mid september. you have about another month of that closure. matt and tam. >> thank you, matt. the fbi is looking into more possible pay to play politics in berks county. agents returned to reading city hall yesterday. current mayor wally scott invited them. mayor scott says he's concerned about deals maids by a previous administration between the parking authority and a together company.

why would you sign 25 year contracts and another 25 on top it? why would you have a together contract with a company that's in another county when we have together companies that are here. >> it was more than a year ago that the fbi initially raided city hall and the home of then mayor vaughn spencer. spencer hasn't been charged but in the time since the former city council president francis acosta admitted he accepted an $1,800 bribe to help repeal city ethics laws. acosta is serving a two year federal prison sentence. >> michael phelps picked up two more gold medals at the summer olympics in rio. he has 21 in his olympic career. where is he going put all these things? that's the most in history. katie ledecky took home the gold. serena williams lost in third round singles competition in tennis. u.s. women's soccer team played to a two-all tie in columbia. the u.s. women's gymnastic team captured gold. eagles right tackle lane

johnson facing a 10 game suspension for a failed ped test. reporter said johnson told him he took an amino acid that was approved by the nfl but then he tested positive for peptide. johnson's agent ken sarnoff tells "action news" his client has not been suspended and any report to the contrary is false. dodgers beat the phillies last night. the series concludes this afternoon. phillies pitcher jeremy hellickson will be on the mound. >> new on "action news" study refeels unsafe drinking water across the country particularly in certain locales. >> skyline view of phoenix turns to dust. arizona is expecting even more weather related problems today. karen. >> we're mostly dry right now. just a little sprinkle moving through the lehigh valley right now but we are keeping a close eye for storms to develop. the latest coming up in the accuweather forecast next.
